Generational Curses

What’s in Your Bloodline?

Perhaps the Reader has seen nations or nationalities stereotyped in movies or literary works, such as, Irishmen being hot-headed, heavy drinkers? Or Frenchmen being lustfully passionate and living the epicurean lifestyle? Or the Germans and Spaniards being harsh and cruel? Or the Gypsies being lazy thieves? The Jews being greedy for riches? Or the Scots being stingy? Etc, etc., etc.

We also have sayings such as, “A chip off of the old block,” or “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” or “Like father, like son” or “Like mother, like daughter.” We note these things concerning patterns in family lines. Is there something to it?

The truth is these generalities came about because of observed trends in certain people groups. That doesn’t make those things true in every member of those people groups or even in the majority of those people groups, but that the trends have been observed enough for comment. These things earmark “generational curses.”

When the Israelites entered the Promised Land, the LORD instructed Moses that six tribes should stand on Mount Gerazim and cry out the blessings of GOD for the people’s obedience and the other six tribes should stand on Mount Ebal and cry out the curses of GOD for the people’s disobedience (DTR 27 & 28). For every sin committed, there exists a countering curse as a discouragement against sinful behavior. Demons remain on the earth for the purpose of carrying out the curse of the Law. Sin opens the spiritual door for the entrance of demons into a person’s soul (and eventually spirit and body, if unsaved).

However, the effects of the curse may not always immediately appear and mankind largely forgets the Law of GOD and its effect on their lives; which should not surprise anyone, since mankind, as a whole, neglects their GOD and Creator. Therefore, when man continues in a certain sin, a spiritual stronghold forms as more and more of similar demons enter and establish themselves within that soul. A spiritual stronghold resembles a fortress and a community of strong demonic influence.

First, we need understanding of what a Man is so that we may realize the consequences which result in spiritual strongholds in a Man’s being. Man’s being contains: 1) a spirit, the part of Man which relates to GOD; 2) a soul, consisting of the Mind, the Will and the Emotions, which expresses the character of the spirit; and 3) a body, which houses the intangible parts and allows for their expression. At death, the spirit and soul either ascend to Heaven or descend to Hell, depending on whether or not the person accepted the salvation wrought upon the cross by our LORD Jesus.

In many churches, the commonly taught doctrine that Christians cannot have demons still pervades although much evidence remains in contradiction. Even in our LORD’s practices, we see healing linked to deliverance, and in many situations, equating the two. In the gospel of Mark, Chapter 9, we read the story of a boy who obviously displays symptoms of what today may be called epilepsy, but when the disciples cannot cast the demon out, Jesus explains to them, “This kind cannot come out, except by prayer” (MRK 9:29). Jesus then heals the boy, even bringing him back to life after deliverance. The disciples knew the “sickness” was caused by demons.

When a child is born with some handicap, all assume that GOD has made the child that way for whatever purpose. But according to the WORD of GOD, ALL His work is PERFECT, “He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful GOD who does no wrong, upright and just is He” (DTR 32:4); He CANNOT create an imperfect child or anything else. That defies His character. The forces of evil, however, work hard in the destruction of the destinies of men and kill, steal and destroy whenever possible (JHN 10:10). They relentlessly and aggressively desire Man’s suffering and destruction.

The truth is that believers CANNOT be sick, or oppressed in any way, unless demons remain in them. In Heaven, the Kingdom of GOD, there exists no evil, no death, no sickness; that is GOD’s perfect will. Why else did Jesus pray, Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven (MTH 6:10; LUK 11:3). GOD designed our bodies in perfection with automatic self-healing functions. If nothing disturbs the operation of our bodies, they will maintain perfect health. So, from where does dis-ease come?

In understanding that, we must first have a little background concerning what demons are and from where do they come. In Genesis, Chapter 6, we read about the genetic coup planned against GOD by a group of fallen angels, no doubt influenced by another fallen one. Keep in mind that when Adam fell, GOD promised that his seed (the seed of the woman) would crush the head of the serpent (Satan) in a mortal wound (GNS 3:15). Satan, therefore, desired the circumvention of that event. If the seed of the Woman might be corrupted then the prophecy might fail.

In an attempt of bringing about a corrupted bloodline, the fallen angelic Watchers, transformed themselves into beautiful “men,” and mated with earthly women (GNS 6:1 & ENC 6:1-2), resulting in the offspring of giants upon the earth. These fallen angels, according to the book of Enoch (7:1-4; 8:1-4; 9:6-9), taught man war, witchcraft and many other evils, so that “the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time. 6 And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I AM grieved that I have made them” (GNS 6:5).

According to the books of Jude and Enoch, the LORD punished the fallen angels responsible by confining them until the day of the final judgment (JUD 1:6 & ENC 10:4-7; 11-15; 12) and caused the death of their offspring (ENC 10:9-10; 12). However, after the flood we see Nimrod (at the tower of Babel), inviting more fallen ones (disguised as gods) into the world and again, we see the rise of giants on the earth once more.

When GOD created all the worlds and dimensions, He also created a vast host of spirits which inhabit the unseen realms and all the angelic ranks and orders which keep His Kingdom in operation. When GOD created Man, He took a spirit from the unseen realms of His creation which He intended training and testing for fellowship and blew the breath of life into him (GNS 2:7) not only giving living flesh to that spirit, but placing His Own Spirit (Holy Spirit) within Man that Man might commune freely with GOD.

With every human birth, the LORD sends a spirit, who pre-exists in another realm, which indwells the body from the moment of conception. That spirit comes to earth for its perfection and the attainment of godliness, winning as a reward an enviable position as a “child or son of GOD” and heir to the Kingdom of GOD.

Whenever the LORD allows conception, He sends a spirit, who comes for testing as a Man. But, when the fallen ones mated with earthly women, GOD did not send spirits for testing because the union was not of Him and those spirits had no permission for coming to earth. Angels were never meant for bearing children and they are not naturally equipped for that purpose, but many orders of angels can transform themselves into the likeness of men or other things. In that case, they transformed themselves into men, but the spirits which would inhabit their offspring could not come from GOD.

Instead, they were rebellious spirits, recruited by the fallen ones and therefore, cursed from the moment they came. In consequence, when the giants died, since their spirits were already cursed (ENC 15:8-10), the LORD confined them to earth until their day of judgment with the purpose of carrying out the curses of the Law (ENC 16:1-2).

The issue, however, exists in the fact that demons, rebellious in nature, do not always adhere to the laws of GOD. They hate Man with a malicious intent and desire that he suffer and perish. Sometimes, those sick are not sick because of sin and are not under the curse of the Law, but simply because of unsolicited and unjustified oppression from the enemy. This happens especially as one seeks GOD more earnestly.

When Adam sinned and Holy Spirit left him, his spirit was then dead to GOD (EPH 2:5) and no longer in communion with Him and for the first time opened to the realm of evil. The connection GOD established at his creation was severed as Holy Spirit departed and Man’s soul became susceptible to the influence of ungodly spirits and all types of temptations.

Holy Spirit could no longer entirely protect him, because the will of Man then ruled. No wonder, that we see in Adam’s sons, in only the second generation, the first murder upon the earth. The LORD warned Cain about sin, “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But, if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it” (GNS 4:7). However, Cain failed and murdered his brother.

Sin opens the door to demonic activities in our lives. The curse of the Law of GOD engages when we engage in sin. However, the effect of the curse continues as the stronghold branches out and related sins take root and establish their own strongholds, forming a network and well-established system of demonic influence, blocking out the voice of GOD and His influence. GOD never stops speaking and encouraging Man in righteousness, but sin blocks His voice. Sin, when fully matured, produces death (JMS 1:5) because of the downward spiral of corruption which affects not only the character of the soul, but manifests in the body and mind in various forms of infirmity.

The danger of creating spiritual strongholds by persistent sinful behavior becomes apparent in its effects upon the succeeding generations, For I, the LORD your GOD, AM a jealous GOD, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me” (EXD 20:5); “hate” with GOD, equating to disobedience. According to John the Beloved, the LORD states, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (JHN 14:15) and conversely, if we disobey, we hate GOD. Here GOD refers not to His eternal judgment, but the process of corruption taking root in man; the sins of the fathers passing down generational strongholds to their children in a spiritual inheritance or spiritual DNA.

The LORD also instructs in DTR 24:16, JRM 31:30, and EZK 18:18 that each man dies for his own sins and that may seem confusing, but in those scriptures the LORD speaks of the final judgment of each person, not the inherent propensity toward sin which manifests from spiritual strongholds; these Scriptures may sound similar, but they speak of two different things. The verse in EXD 20:5 describes the effects of the curse perpetuated and growing exponentially and not contradicting that each man receives judgment for his own sin which Moses, Jeremiah and Ezekiel proclaim.

Not only does one inherit blue or brown eyes in one’s physical body, but also the propensity towards certain sin and curses resulting from the sins of ancestors, such as early death running in a family or diabetes or heart attack, etc. One must understand that all illness results from the curse of the Law or demonic oppression, not directly from GOD unless necessary. There can be no sickness or infirmity of any kind without the involvement of demons. GOD desires our good (JRM 29:11).

One might say, didn’t the cross remove the curse of the Law? Yes, for those who believe, but that removes the penalty of eternal judgment for sin, not necessarily the consequences of sin in this life or the sin of our ancestors. And as we saw, our spiritual DNA changes by sin, and those changes can be inherited. Even believers do not get anyway with sin, despite some of the teachings that have gone about recently. If we do not repent of known sin, then the devil has opportunity of accusing us so that we may not be blessed or healed. Sometimes we need an examination of our family lines, in case we have been held back from blessing or healing by ancestral strongholds of which we must repent that no accusations may be made against US.

The Kingdom of GOD operates as any other kingdom (but much better), with its own laws and its own justice system. Believers have no exemption from sinful behavior. Sin in the life of a believer still has repercussions even if that believer eventually winds up in Heaven. Unconfessed or habitual sin blocks prayers, blessing, healings, deliverance, revelation and power in the believer’s life and inhibits the glory of GOD’s flow through that believer. That doesn’t mean the anointing will not work, because anointing is a gift from GOD which He will not remove and it may or may not work if sin is present, but it certainly will not operate in fullness.

We must be mindful that the LORD tells the parable of those who say, “LORD, LORD, did we not prophesy in Your name and in Your name drive out demons and in Your name perform many miracles?” and the LORD’s response, “Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” (MTH 7:22-23). The ability of doing signs, miracles and wonders does not mean one is saved and sometimes the person struggles in sin because he is either not saved or delivered or filled with Holy Spirit. It may be any of those reasons. The devil also produces miracles!

Anywhere the glory of GOD exists, there is no sickness or death or any mishap. That is not to say that one who suffers illness sins. Demons don’t play fair! Even though their presence on earth remains conditional on their strict performance of carrying out the penalty of breaking the Law of GOD, the corruption of their character provokes them to behavior outside of that limit and often, trespasses or intrusions occur where there exists no legal cause for trespass or intrusion. Hence, the gospel story of the blind man of whom the disciples say, “Who sinned?” and the LORD replies, “‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’” (JHN 9:3). Jesus attributes that the blindness was allowed in bringing glory to GOD, not that GOD made him blind.

That means the infirmity was NOT the perfect WILL of GOD. The LORD’s justice does not always allow Him the pleasure of intervening in the work of the enemy. He often waits for the enemy’s own efforts of entrapping itself. Therefore, GOD can never be said as unjust even to evil doers. Again, GOD cannot create anything imperfectly, but His perfect design sometimes receives damage from enemy interference, either in an effort of thwarting that person’s destiny or simply creating suffering in their lives and those around them for the pleasure of demons. The LORD instead, brings good out of the evil work done by the enemy as much as He may.

If a Christian finds himself sick or suffering, one or more, usually many, demons likely infest that one, legally or illegally. One may take medicine or pray, but the issue cannot be resolved until deliverance takes place in some form. Many Christians have been taught after salvation one cannot have demons. The truth is that a Christian cannot be possessed in his spirit, because Holy Spirit inhabits the spirit of a Christian, in fact, bonding eternally with the spirit of Man, and therefore, at salvation, Man becomes a “new creation” (2 COR 5:17). However, the soul and body of a Christian are in process and have not undergone regeneration yet. That is why Paul says, “Work out your salvation in fear and trembling” (PHP 2:12).

When Paul refers to our bodies as the temple of the LORD, he means it quite literally. The analogy makes our spirit comparable to the Holy of Holies; the soul comparable to the Holy Place where most of the priests minister, and the outer court as our bodies. One theologian says it something like this, “Our spirits have been redeemed at salvation; our souls are in the process of redemption; and our bodies will be redeemed after earth.”

Nothing else can get into the “Holy of Holies” of a believer, because of the presence of Holy Spirit, tightly knit to our spirit in marriage, but spiritual strongholds find root in our souls and manifest in our bodies, whether in sickness or bad behavior and in fact, we enter this world with baggage from our ancestors. If a Christian behaves badly, he obeys something other than Holy Spirit and likely from an inherited spiritual stronghold or one built by his own sins. Holy Spirit very much inhibits sinful behavior through the conviction of truth and righteousness, especially when abiding in a believer, but one may ignore His voice.

Being filled with Holy Spirit helps the believer in strengthening him against the temptations of sin and also because when Holy Spirit fills our entire being instead of His confinement to only our spirit, His very presence and glory spreads throughout our being, pushing out many things which do not belong. Then, also, without so much interference we may hear the voice of GOD more clearly. Holy Spirit, however, normally will not pervade our being without invitation. He comes in at salvation and quickens our dead spirit, making it alive to GOD, but until we ask, He usually goes no further. That is why the laying on of hands, triggers the infilling presence of Holy Spirit as one Spirit-filled believer imparts the full presence of Holy Spirit to another believer. One may also simply ask the LORD for the infilling. The posture of the heart makes the difference of whether or not one receives filling.

When this happens, Holy Spirit may more freely work throughout our being, cleansing and renewing, opening our eyes and ears and other senses to the spiritual realm and allowing the power of Holy Spirit flow through our beings to others for deliverance, healing and the impartation of spiritual gifts. When a believer receives the infilling of Holy Spirit, often many strongholds break and immediately many sins fall away. One, however, must maintain intimacy with GOD so Holy Spirit may continue His work. Also, one should regularly pray in one’s spiritual “prayer” language that one may receive the full benefit of infilling.

Now, let’s take a look at how sickness occurs and begins in the body. Since demons, originally godly spirits, fell, they use the gifts and powers given by GOD for ungodly purposes. Certain demons have the power of creating lying symptoms of various kinds in humans. Now, remember GOD created our bodies in perfection for self-healing.

But when a demon effects a lying symptom in our bodies (in other words, the symptom does not result from a failure of our bodies, but actually does not exist in the physical realm, but only in the perceived imagination), if we do not accept that symptom, it cannot take hold, except in the presence of sin which opens a door for the work of demonic forces. The lying symptom results from a tampering with our physical perceptions. Just as proven, what you see is not always real, (as in magic tricks) what you feel may be the same. The lying symptom is a trick as it were, deceiving the victim into believing that he is sick.

The devil and its demons have no power of creation. Conversely, Man was created in the image of GOD (GNS 1:27) and one of the ways that we resemble GOD is that our words and thoughts have the power of creation, not to the extent of our Creator, but very much powerfully. The Scriptures say, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he (PRV 23:7).

How we think/believe about ourselves and what we say about ourselves determines our world and our future. Negative words and thoughts actually act as curses upon us and bring about the effects of a curse, opening doors to demons for their filthy work. Even when we speak words in jest, or things such as, “I’m too_____!” we invoke curses upon ourselves and others with evil words.

If an unmerited lying symptom comes upon us and we say, “I’m sick!”; we agree with the lying symptom and give it permission in our body. Then the demons associated with the original lying symptom push more in efforts of increasing the effects of sickness for they desire the destruction of man and particularly that he might suffer as much as possible before that destruction. The more we accept sickness, the more it develops until the demons have made the body respond as though sick. This happens whether in the body or the mind, for what we think affects us, eventually bringing about changes in our bodies to which doctors give various names.

Another fallacy often taught in the pride of man expresses Man’s possession of original thought. Man lives on earth for the testing or proving of his spirit through the expression of his soul and is basically a decision-maker. Any thought that comes into Man’s mind originates from one of two sources, either from GOD or from the realm of evil. Man remains incapable of original thought and Man’s job consists of making the choice of which source he follows or believes. For that reason, Paul advises “casting down every vain imagination that exalts itself against the knowledge of GOD” (2 COR 10:5).

Those suffering from depression, suffer because their thinking becomes ungodly. This writer intends no criticism, but depression results from wrong thinking OR thinking on the wrong things. What does the Scripture say, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (PHP 4:8). If we obey the Scripture, we reap its rewards. We must always also realize that our perception of what happened or what is may not be true or the way GOD sees things. We are not capable of proper judgment about such things.

However, if we focus our thoughts on things gone wrong, or the painful things people have done to us or our discontentment with the way things are going, we set ourselves up for depression and other such things, even suicide. People who make us suffer will face GOD and his judgment; our thinking of those evil things does not help or prevent that. One’s refusal of forgiving others, no matter what they have done, results in one’s condemnation because that one does not believe the WORD of GOD and lives in unrepentance or bitterness, etc. and therefore cannot be saved if they will not repent and believe in forgiveness (MTH 18:21-35).

One may meditate on the WORD of GOD or the goodness of GOD or the blessings we have from GOD or one may fill one’s mind and heart with evil thinking. Evil thinking, especially when associated with unforgiveness, is SIN. It, therefore, evokes the curse of the Law of GOD and always results in judgment. When we practice unforgiveness, we in no way harm or retaliate against the one whom we have not forgiven, but we bring curses down upon ourselves and risk our eternal destination.

Spiritual strongholds result from repeated sinful behavior; a lifestyle of sin. The first sin opens the door and gives demons license to effect the curse. As the behavior continues, more and more demons enter, building a spiritual fortress which increases exponentially, nullifying any godly effect in that one afflicted. Also, as the generations pass, those strongholds become so engrossed that one feels, “that’s just the way I am.” Remembering this, helps the believer in realizing that NO sin is small!

When a person marries, and the “two become one” (MRK 10:8), this is not just a euphemism. The couple share spiritual things as well, including spiritual strongholds. That explains why promiscuous activity corrupts the character; every new partner brings new things to the table, introducing new strongholds. In the analogy of the body of the Christian as the temple of GOD, defined by the Apostle Paul, GOD sees sexual sin as perverse forms of idolatry performed on His very altar (in our Holy of Holies) before His eyes. That also explains the severity of GOD’s judgment on sexual sin. These strongholds pass down into children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the third and fourth generation unless interrupted by deliverance.

Look, for example, at the Biblical figure of King David, walking on his roof in the cool of the evening, he sees a woman in a nearby house bathing. She is very beautiful. Contemplating on her, he has her brought to him and although she is the wife of a friend, one of his thirty mighty men, he lays with her. When she becomes pregnant and her husband is away in war, he arranges for the death of her husband in battle so that his sin is hidden and he may marry Bathsheba.

When his children from several wives are grown, one of his sons rapes his half-sister and her brother, in retaliation, murders him. Eventually Absalom tries doing away with his father so that he may have the throne. Not to mention Solomon, also David’s son and successor, who had approximately 700 wives and 300 concubines. Some traditions even say that David himself was a bastard child, but this writer has seen no proof of that. But in this story, we witness how spiritual strongholds grow and perpetuate down family lines, even in godly people, unless we deal with them.

One writer gives this analogy: One may raise a duck without a pond. They do need drinking water, but not necessarily “swimming” water. They can grow fat and healthy without that as evident with commercial growers. But, if you put a duck next to a pond, without thinking, it will jump in and happily swim; that is its nature. In the same way, a person succumbs to the generational curses of his family, unless that nature has been changed by the blood of Christ in deliverance. That also reflects the reason we have sayings, such as, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree;” or “Like mother, like daughter;” or “A chip off the old block.”

A curse of sin seeks perpetuation through an individual in that family line, even if that one gives no opportunity to the curse. For instance, this writer knows an individual whose father fell to alcoholism. Growing up with a violent and unpredictable parent, she never desired alcohol, because of the effects witnessed on her father. But when she married, the man she married became an alcoholic and she suffered under him as well. Even though a Christian woman and that she never gave place to the stronghold of addiction of alcoholism and it received no outlet in this woman, the spirit of an alcoholic found attraction to the idle stronghold of addiction in her and sought the perpetuation of the curse through her marriage.

It’s an unsettling thought, that spirits can cause attraction between people, but that is the truth of it. Doesn’t the Scripture say, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (AMS 3:3 NKJV). The common ground between two people may be their spiritual strongholds. That is also why sometimes when one spouse gets saved, the relationship crumbles, unless the other gets saved also.

Whenever the head of a family line dies, the familial spirits within that one seek a new home. They look for opportunity through the lines of inheritance, just as a lawyer might look for heirs. If the demon/s cannot enter the next in line, they continue down the lines of inheritance until they find an open door for their own particular brand of sin. This writer has witnessed this among humans, but the most unusual incidence witnessed was in the animal kingdom. And yes, demons can inhabit animals (MRK 5:9-13), although most prefer humans.

My Mother fed a group of feral cats in the area of her home and one particular black cat that she fed had a very bad disposition. Many of the feral cats that my mother fed became friendly and would often come up and rub against her leg, asking for a little petting, but not that cat. She was a very productive mama cat, but very few of her kittens survived, because she was negligent and not very protective or careful in their feeding. She quickly weaned them at a young age and left them to fend for themselves.

However, she had one daughter, also a black cat, who did survive and prosper. Surprisingly, this cat was very friendly and affectionate and when she had kittens, she was very careful for them, nurturing them for a long after the time most cats would normally wean their kittens. She was very much enjoyed and favored for her good temperament. She had a few batches of kittens where she showed this exemplary behavior. Then one day, her mother died.

Suddenly, this mild mannered feline became a totally different creature. She exhibited all the traits of the mother cat and for all practical purposes became that mother cat in all her ways. Humans have souls capable of judgment, in fact, that capacity is the means of our testing, but cats and other animals, although they have souls (but not spirits), do not understand the difference between good and evil. Therefore, when demons attempt finding the next “heir,” they cannot always enter in the human lines, but since animals have not that perception, the friendly black cat just became the same kind of personality as her mother.

Demons do possess limitations in regards to what they may legally do and still remain “free” until the day of their final judgment. They know what they should not do, but that doesn’t always mean they won’t try doing something forbidden if they feel they might get away with it or if the “profit” seems very great.

Too many have been deceived into believing the existence of Heaven or Hell is simply a fairytale told to children. However, many people have died and gone to Heaven or Hell and have lived again, reporting their experiences. Their testimonies, whether saved or unsaved, are very much consistent and have been documented even in the secular world. But, because those do not believe, they feel free in any sin they desire committing, unknowing that not only do they pile up judgment for themselves in eternity, but that they also pass down to their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren many hardships and struggles and possibly an early or violent death.

Lies/deceptions open the door to demonic temptation, which begins the whole process of repetitive sin, which builds the spiritual stronghold. In breaking down a spiritual stronghold, the original lie/s should be renounced and combatted with Scripture stating the truth opposite that lie. For instance, if the temptation happened because, “no one will know,” then a Scripture such as, “O LORD, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; You understand my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down; You are aware of all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, O LORD (PSM 139:1-4); that Scripture states GOD’s truth against that lie.

If you feel that your life or health have been affected by demonic interference, take the following steps to break the power of any spiritual stronghold which has afflicted you:

  • DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN OF YOUR SALVATION or if you pray for another, of that one’s salvation. (At the end of this booklet is a sample prayer of salvation.) The exception to this rule would be if a life were at stake or one could not be saved until freed. For unless the Holy Spirit resides, there remains no protection from other spirits which may come in after deliverance (PLEASE READ: LUK 11:24-26; MTH 12:43-45). If you pray for an individual who is not saved or where there be any doubt of salvation, only BIND the spirits until salvation occurs. Binding of spirits stops their action until deliverance may be effected. You may need to repeat the binding including related spirits. In that case, PRAY: “I bind all unclean spirits of (name the sin) and destroy all their works in (name the individual) in the name of the Savior, the LORD Jesus Christ.”

  • If saved, identify the spiritual stronghold as accurately as possible; i.e., “fornication” or “lying” or “self-hatred,” or even “trauma,” etc. Even things which we do not initiate can bring in spirits because they affect our souls. (Anything that creates a violent emotional response can open doors to demons.) State the truth from GOD’s Scripture which most applies to the situation.

  • Renounce the spirits in charge of that stronghold as follows:

“I renounce all association with spirits of (name the sin) and break any covenants made with unclean spirits in the name of the Savior, the LORD Jesus Christ.” If praying for another, add after “with spirits” “in (name the individual).”

  • If the source of the stronghold can be identified, such as knowing the activity which began the sinful pattern, repent of that specific sin, whether it was yours or an ancestor’s (such as a known fornication, abortion, addiction, hatred, feuds, or unforgiveness, etc). Sometimes, when we know something is wrong, but we cannot pinpoint it, for instance, something that our ancestors did that we could not normally know, we can ask GOD for revelation of what deed/s need repentance.

PRAY:I repent of (name the activity) and of all (name the sin) and all associations with any spirits which have had anything to do with those things in me (or another individual if praying for someone else) and I ask forgiveness and deliverance and that all evil assignments be cancelled, that all curses be broken and reversed and my bloodlines cleansed of all their effects in the name of the Savior, the LORD Jesus Christ. I command all unholy spirits associated with any of these things in me (or another) to come out NOW and go to the Abyss and I command all their works UNDONE in the name of the Savior, the LORD Jesus Christ.”

If the source is unknown, just repent of the sin according to the fore-mentioned pattern. It is also well to renounce and repent of any related sins to that stronghold, i.e, “lying” and “deception” or “stealing” which often link to one another.

  • It may be necessary to repeat renouncements and repentance as often as needed until all temptation in this area ceases. Deliverance works like peeling an onion’s outer layers, sometimes it takes a while before one gets to the core. It requires breaking down the concentric walls of the stronghold and layers of defense built by the enemy. Also, repeat the truth from GOD’s WORD as often as necessary in standing against that sin.

  • One should also take care in not reopening any doors that have been closed by staying repentant. Always repent as soon as Holy Spirit convicts you of wrong.

Another important consideration this writer must mention—objects inhabited by spirits or carrying curses. One should seriously review all items in your dwelling, especially gifts or inherited pieces, assessing whether or not they might carry unwanted spirits. Many come home from vacations having purchased some curiosity, not realizing they have brought an idol into their home or an object which has been cursed, thereby giving the devil fodder for accusation.

Of course, if one, before salvation, engaged in sinful behaviors or witchcraft, etc., any paraphernalia associated with those things should be destroyed. Burning is the best way to break their power.

Remember, the Kingdom of GOD is a legal system and the LORD may not protect you if harboring another “god” or willingly receiving a curse. It is also helpful to anoint your home with oil after cleansing, dedicating it to the One and Only True GOD, YHVH.
